Neutralizing Price Objections: A Custom ROI Calculator for High-Performance Mining Abrasives
A high-performance mining abrasives provider kept losing deals because procurement teams balked at its price premium over generic slag. We built a custom total-cost calculator and integrated it with HubSpot to neutralize the price objection: it quantifies hidden disposal and productivity costs and shifts the conversation to total project ROI.
Executive Summary
Context
A global abrasives supplier was struggling to justify its price premium over commodity slag, and sales teams were losing deals because they lacked a standardized way to prove the product's long-term productivity gains and reduced waste-management costs.
What We Built
We built a custom total-cost calculator, hosted on HubSpot landing pages, backed by a logic engine that produces project-specific ROI reports for industrial buyers.
Tech Stack
- HubSpot Landing Pages
- HubSpot Marketing Hub (Workflows & Email)
- Engaging.io (Custom Logic Backend)
Not a fit for low-stakes commodity products or companies where the buyer journey does not involve a "total cost of ownership" (TCO) evaluation.
The Challenge
The marketing team's value messaging didn't match the sales team's pricing friction, and prospective buyers in the "Blast" and "Waterjet" segments stayed anchored to the low price of slag. The tool had to handle complex variable inputs, nozzle speed, substrate type, regional disposal fees, while still staying user-friendly on a landing page. The calculation data also had to flow back into HubSpot, where it could trigger automated, persona-specific follow-up sequences that reinforced the ROI findings.
Our Approach
We built the total-cost calculator as a middle-of-the-funnel (MOFU) asset, choosing Engaging.io for the backend infrastructure because it could handle the heavy mathematical lifting that standard HubSpot forms could not process. Disposal costs became the variable the calculator leaned on, since cheaper slags produce 5x the waste volume of the premium abrasive, which let us turn a disposal liability into a competitive advantage for the higher-priced product. Two email sequences, triggered in HubSpot, then nurtured users based on their specific calculation results.
This engagement is part of our growth programs work for mining & natural resources organisations.
Impact
A Standard Way to Show Total Cost
The sales team got a calculator that moves conversations from unit price to long-term operational ROI.
A Mid-Funnel Conversion Point
The calculator is a mid-funnel asset for buyers who are evaluating project costs and productivity metrics.
Persona-Driven Nurturing
Automated email sequences are written for "Blast" and "Waterjet" buyers, each tuned to its specific technical needs.
Enhanced Data Capture
The calculator captures project data on consumption rates and disposal volumes that standard lead profiles used to miss.
We used Engaging.io to host the calculation logic, which kept the complex industrial math from compromising landing page performance or Core Web Vitals.
We built logic that outputs project-specific ROI summaries from user inputs, giving procurement teams a tangible "Proof of Value" document.
HubSpot workflows branch leads based on their calculator inputs. "Waterjet" prospects get different nurturing content than "Blast" prospects do.
We linked calculator activity to the centralized reporting dashboards, which tracks how interactive engagement lines up with MQL-to-SQL progress.
Buyers in the "Blast" and "Waterjet" segments stayed anchored to the low price of slag. The calculator takes inputs such as nozzle speed, substrate type and regional disposal fees, and Engaging.io does the math that standard HubSpot forms couldn't. Disposal cost carries the argument, since cheaper slags produce 5x the waste volume of the premium abrasive. The results go back into HubSpot, where two email sequences follow up on each user's calculation.
FAQ
We use a decoupled architecture. The heavy calculation logic runs on a specialized backend, like Engaging.io, while HubSpot Landing Pages act as the interface. Data pushes into the CRM via API, so the site stays fast while still delivering enterprise-grade logic.
Yes. The calculator is a mobile-responsive HubSpot asset, so sales reps can run live ROI simulations during site visits or sales calls. That gives them an immediate, data-backed response to "it’s too expensive" objections.
